Her live sets are multi-dimensional as she performs original pieces with a live band as well as cover songs from different eras. Makeda enjoys paying homage to the soulful era of the 70s as one of her favourite songs to perform is ‘Lovin You’ by Minnie Ripperton. The way that it is filled with so much expression of deep emotion is what Makeda favours most. Some describe Makeda’s voice as ‘sweet’ and ‘pure’. Her stage outfits are heavily inspired by the 90s band, TLC. Makeda admires the way that they were unapologetically non-conforming to feminine standard. For her upcoming live performances, Makeda will dress in a ‘fluid’ fashion. Sporting both baggy clothing and fitted dresses.
Makeda writes heartfelt lyrics often about personal experiences. These things include relationship struggles, self-belief and empowerment, and healing childhood trauma. She finds that songwriting allows her to turn her emotions, both good and bad, into a peaceful melody. Makeda’s writing style is unique as it leaves space for listeners to reflect and relate. She intentionally writes in this way as she believes that it is important for those who to choose to listen to see themself in her music. Makeda’s lyrics deliver a warm and uplifting message, creating a space where people feel seen and heard. She also uses her lyrics to spread awareness on social issues impacting African American culture. As these topics are often heavy, Makeda likes to include notes of positivity and hope, whilst also honouring the monumental figures who are a part of her history.
