When I first started working in the music sector, I quickly realized that it wasn’t yet as inclusive as it could be for Disabled people like me and I had a hard time finding safe spaces to be an artist. Therefore, in 2023 I set up the first accessible open mic event in Pontypridd, began a scholarship with Music Production for Women, and eventually went to perform at festivals such as Green Man, Big Love and Immersed.
In 2023, I was also funded by Arts Council Wales to start Amplifying Accessibility, a project finding and distributing all the ways Disabled people could access a career in music in Wales. This project still runs today, and has supported creatives who have now started their own businesses and go on to perform on Y Llais. This work is supported by my current PhD studies, “Bridging the Gap: investigating the experiences of Disabled music industry workers in Wales and the barriers to diversifying representation”. Some of its most exciting achievements have been receiving mentorship from Sony Music, as well as working with Youth Music and Musicians Union.
My work as an artist is heavily embedded in experimental electronic, using samples of my narrative environment to create melodies, drumbeats and sound effects. Lyrically I tend to address social topics such as Disability, mental health, domestic abuse and growing up as a young carer in rural Wales. My music has had 4 plays on BBC Introducing in the past 6 months and I think it is important to use music as a vessel for starting conversations that prompt cultural change. Some of my commissioned work has included creating music for the Future Generations Act on accessible climate action, Disability Arts Cymru on tokenizing Disability, and The National Library of Wales on the similarities between being a young carer and the 1950’s housewife (of which I also self-recorded and produced a conceptual music video for).
I also think it’s important to share our experiences of developing a career in music wherever possible. Therefore, I mentor music industry workers through Help Musicians/The Ivors Academy and am an access support officer for The Arts Council of Wales. This is supported by my work as a grants assessor for Youth Music.
