Deryn May

Deryn is an artist based in Pembrokeshire, Wales. Her work explores our relationship with nature through material and place.
The act of gathering is integral to her creative process; she spends much of her time walking through the woods and along the shoreline, hunting for treasure. Each found object tells a story, and through playful exploration of her findings, designs emerge.
Having studied jewellery design, she is interested in the ways that these found objects and materials can interact with the body. Combining the foraged with the made, she uses etched copper to add textures and narratives to her work, and wire is used to create structure and shape. Articulated components encourage tactile interaction and stitch is used to pull materials and ideas together. Each piece becomes a wearable part of the landscape, there is a sense of being held by these beautiful places that surround us.
She uses site-specific photography to capture the essence of each piece, and records her process through film. She is interested in how both creativity and natural spaces can bring us a sense of comfort and wellbeing, and continually explores the ways in which these can interweave.
