David Robinson
David Robinson is an award-winning painter and printmaker based in Porthcawl. His work is rooted in this area, reflecting the importance of the local community.
His work is figurative, using drawing from imagination – or observation – as the starting point. This may include taking an easel out to paint the local landscape, or using a sketchbook to record ideas for compositions, alongside drawings of local people. His main media are oil painting and lino printing – the latter enabling him to work in a graphic style.
His Christian faith informs his approach, seeking to ‘share light’ (Matthew 5:16) by making work that gives people encouragement and a positive outlook on our diverse society today. He is a member of Capel y Tabernacl Porthcawl and Co-Secretary of Churches Together in Porthcawl.
Solo exhibitions include: ‘Hospital Care’, paying tribute to those who cared for him and ‘Living the Dream’ - reflecting the joy of the South Wales coast. He is currently developing a project on LGBTQ+ Faith in Wales, reflecting his interest in how queer and faith identities intersect.
He has contributed to many group exhibitions, including: ‘Cast into Neath’ (Neath), ‘Arts for Sanctuary’ (London), ‘Hadau’ (Cardiff), ‘Wales Contemporary’ (London/Milford Haven), ‘A Cloud of Witnesses’ (London), ‘Y Lle Celf’ (Pontypridd National Eisteddfod) and numerous exhibitions with Cowbridge Art Society.
David originally trained as a linguist and has lived in France, Spain and Belgium. He speaks Welsh, French and Spanish.
