Becki Skehel

Becki Skehel, known online as Creatrix Cymraes, is a multidisciplinary artist and maker from Cardiff, Cymru. Her primary medium is collage; her practice is curiosity-led and often incorporates painting (watercolours, acrylics, and gouache), assemblage, sculptural work in cardboard, wire and clay, and mixed media work including embroidery, mosaic and jewellery-making techniques and tools. Becki is chronically ill, disabled and neurodivergent, with a history of complex trauma - this lived experience informs, drives and necessitates her work. From an academic background in Politics and Philosophy and a professional grounding in social media marketing, Becki found that art was her lifeline as a series of diagnoses and life events gradually eroded her energy, physical ability, social life and career. Becki's work explores themes of health and illness; motherhood and parenting; queerness and otherness; social justice and what we owe to ourselves and each other.
Becki's work has been exhibited at Dyddiau Du, Cardiff Umbrella, Carnedd, and Unstable Arts. She gave her first solo exhibition, Little Scraps of Anything, in 2023 at the Creative Plug Gallery. She has no formal arts education, although part of her undergraduate degree focused on the philosophy of art. As a self-taught artist, Becki feels that she is well-placed to help others without formal arts education to connect with and explore their own innate creativity, outside the shadow of elitist institutions. Becki runs regular Collage Club workshops at Unstable Arts in Roath, Cardiff, as well as family-friendly arts events at various venues throughout Cardiff.
Becki's work has been published in Bi Women Quarterly and she has created commission work for the campaign group End Youth Homelessness Cymru. She lives with her husband and sons in Roath, Cardiff.
