Ali Street

Ali is a multimedia artist currently living and working in Cardiff. Their practice involves notions of transformation and identity which they achieve through an exploration of history, contemporary philosophy and gender politics. Through each medium they will reflect different time periods depending on what the materials and processes offer.

Using print they will make work that looks distressed and mysterious. They use various processes
within metal etching to achieve a textual look as to make the print look more like a lost archive.
As well as to use symbolism and motifs from a prior time.

With textiles they look for inspiration from old English and Welsh embroidery and quilting such as
religious copes from the ‘Opus Anglicanum’ as well as contemporary quilting and patchwork. They like to use similar stitchwork from the period to create a sense of being within the past. Often employing angelic and androgynous beings to create a conceptual sense of queer subjectivity within Medieval Britain. Usually included them in depictions that have a sense of narrative and mythos.

Alongside these two projects they also engage with other mediums and are engaged with local musicians in creating cover art as well as music videos.
